Course Requirement: This course aims at training your skill in making a public talk, including your thesis defense. To pass this course, basically (i) you have to attend all of the seminars held both at the University of Ottawa and at Carleton University and (ii) you have to make a successful presentation (using transparencies).
To register for the seminar course you must complete a Permission Form and bring it to Sharmila Namasivayampillai. Before you can reserve a time for your presentation, you must send me an abstract in plain text (MS Word is not plain text!) and you and your supervisor must complete an Abstract Approval Form. Finally, before you can give your presentation you and your supervisor must complete a Presentation Approval Form at least 2 weeks before your presentation. Failure to do so will result in your presentation being cancelled.
When you attend a seminar, please do not forget to sign an attendance sheet, which is a proof of your attendance. The regulations say that you must attend five seminars at Carleton University and five seminars at the University of Ottawa; otherwise, you will fail the course automatically. During the academic year, you must give one public talk (20 minutes for a talk and 10 minutes for question/answer) and the talk is evaluated by the seminar supervisor and audience.
Arriving late to someone's seminar is rude, both to the audience and especially to the speaker. If you arrive late, enter and take late-ticket and a seat as quietly as possible. At the end the current talk you will have to stand in front of the room and apologize the speaker and the audience for interrupting their talk.
For more rules and regulations about the graduate seminar, see the information (starting on page 24) in the Graduate Handbook.
The seminar alternates weekly between Carleton University and the University of Ottawa.
The talks at Carleton University will start at 10:00 and will be held in Room 240 of the Tory Building (240TB). This is building number 1 on the Campus Map.
The talks at University of Ottawa will start at 10:00 and will be held in MRT 252 (Morisset Building). Here is a link to campus building names at University of Ottawa.
Besides an overhead projector for transparencies, a computer and a projector will be available for Powerpointtm presentations, if needed. The easiest way to do this is to bring a USB key with your PowerPoint or PDF file on it.
To book a slot prepare an abstract and have your supervisor and me sign an Abstract Approval Form. Then send me an email stating the date you would like as well as a plain text version of your title and abstract. Finally, you must submit a Presentation Approval Form at least 2 weeks before your scheduled seminar.
We also have an archive of the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 seminars. Here is a list of the previous talks this year.
